The Lamp-Lite Playhouse

Located on Old Tyler Road at Loop 224, The playhouse regular season runs from
September to May. There is a yearly Christmas special, summer specials, and
plays for children. Acting workshops are scheduled throughout the year for
children and adults. Anyone interested in performing at the theater should call and

The College of Fine Arts University Series

This group presents professional touring productions, as well as SFA art, music
and theatre productions.  All performances are in the Turner Auditorium at the
Griffith Fine Arts Center on the SFA campus. For more information, call the Office

The College of Fine Arts College Series

This series serves the East Texas Community and SFA students with selected
SFA faculty presentations, guest artists and major student art, music and theatre
events. For more information call the Office of Arts Information at (936) 468-6407.

Department of Music

The department offers more than 75 concerts to East Texas audiences each year.
Most of these performances are free to the public and are presented either in the
Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building or in the Recital Hall of the
Music building on the SFA campus. Some of the musical programs offered by the
department are the annual performance of Handel's Messiah, Christmas
Madrigal Dinners, a spring opera production, and a band concert in the park. In
addition to its concerts, the department offers a series of summer camps and

Department of Theatre

The department offers year round entertainment to both the campus and the East
Texas community. During the school year, the department stages four main stage
productions and numerous student-directed experimental productions. In the
summer, the department offers a season of repertory.  The productions are held
in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. For more information, call the

National Forests and Parks


Referred to collectively as the National Forests in Texas, the Angelina,
Sabine, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston National Forests are in the heavily
forested "Piney Woods" of East Texas. They are comprised of 665,729 acres
of federally owned land, intermingled with private holdings, scattered
throughout 12 counties.

are administered by the US Forest Service under the multiple use principle
with each natural resource managed under a coordinated, balanced plan.

Developed recreational areas have varying facilities. Designated fee areas
require self-deposit of daily use fees for overnight camping or day use of
developed swimming beaches. The National Forests that are within easy access
from Nacogdoches are:

Angelina National Forest
156,153 acres in Angelina, Jasper, Nacogdoches and San Augustine Counties.

Boykin Springs - 14 miles southeast of Zavalla via Texas 63, Forest Service
Road 313. Facilities: picnicking, camping, swimming, shelters, camp trailer
parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking water.

Letney - On Lake Sam Rayburn, 25 miles southeast of Zavalla via Texas 63,
FM 225, FSR 335. Facilities: picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, shelters,
concessions, camp trailer parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, hiking
trails, drinking water.

Townsend - On Lake Sam Rayburn, 5 miles northwest of Braddus via Texas 147,
FM 1277, FM 2923. Facilities: picnicking, camping, boating, shelters, camp
trailer parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking water.

Harvey Creek - On Lake Sam Rayburn, 9 miles east and south of Braddus via
FM 83, 2390. Facilities: picnicking, camping, boating, shelters, camp trailer
parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking water.

Caney Creek - On Lake Sam Rayburn, 14 miles southeast of Zavalla via Texas
63, FM 2743. Facilities: picnicking, campings, boating, shelters, camp trailer
parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking water.

Sandy Creek - On lake Sam Rayburn, 21 miles southeast of Zavalla via Texas
63, FSR 333. Facilities: picnicking, campings, boating, shelters, camp trailer
parking (no hookups), concessions, sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking
water.

Bouton Lake - 15 miles southeast of Zavalla via Texas 63, FSR 303. Facilities:
hookups, sanitary facilities, drinking water.


Davy Crockett National Forest
161,478 acres in Houston and Trinity Counties. Ranger offices in Crockett

Recreational Areas:

Ratcliff Lake - Between Kennard and Ratcliff. FSR 520 loop area. Facilities:
picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, shelters, concessions, camp trailer
parking (no hookups). sanitary facilities. hiking trails. drinking water.

Neches Bluff - On the Neches River about 7 miles southwest of Alto via
Texas 21, FSR 511. Facilities: picnicking, sanitary facilities.

Kickapoo - 3 miles southeast of Groveton via US 87. Facilities: picnicking.
sanitary facilities, hiking trails, drinking water.

Big Slough Canoe Trail - On the Neches River near Neches Bluff. See Forest
Ranger in Crockett for location map. Facilities: boating and scenic area.

Sabine National Forest
189,151 acres in Jasper. Sabine, San Augustine. Nenon and Shelby Counties.
Ranger office is in Hemphill (936) 787-3870.
Recreational areas:

Boles Field - 7 miles east of Shelbyville via FM 117, FM 2694. Facilities:
picnicking, sanitary facilities, drinking water.

Indian Mounds - On Toledo Bend Reservoir, east of Hemphill via FM 83 about
5 miles and 7 miles southeast and south on FSRs 115 and 115A. Facilities:
picnicking, camping, boating, camp trailer parking (no hookups), sanitary
facilities, hiking, drinking water, scenic area.

Lakeview - On Toledo Bend Reservoir, primitive camping area. 15 miles
southeast of Hemphill via Texas S7 and local road. Facilities: picnicking,
camping. sanitary facilities, drinking water.

Ragtown -On Toledo Bend Reservoir about 15 miles southeast of Shelbyville via
Texas 87, FM 139 and FSRs 101 and 1262. Facilities" picnicking, camping,
boating, cap trailer parking (no hookups), sanitary facilities, drinking water.

Red Hills Lake - About 3 miles north of Milan via Texas 87. Facilities:
picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, shelters, concessions. camp trailer
parking (no hookups). sanitary facilities, hiking, drinking water.

Willow Oak - On Toledo Bend Reservoir, 14 miles southeast of Hemphill via
Texas 87, FSR 117. Facilities: picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, camp

The most delicious festival in Texas includes tons of
fresh blueberries sold on the square, blueberry
pancakes, a giant inflatable Bounce Park, blueberry
cobbler and blueberry ice cream contests, Elsie’s
Borden Express Train, a 42 tournament, classic car
show, a pie eating contest, food and arts vendors and
lots more. Nearby blueberry farms are available for
festival-goers to tour and pick their own blueberries.
Live musical entertainment includes acoustic folk
guitar to country to rock throughout the day on
stages located downtown and in Festival Plaza. Set
deep in Texas Forest Country in the Oldest Town in
Texas, the Texas Blueberry Festival is a delightful
day of the America you dreamed still existed.
